Neuro 101: Introduction to the Brain

MiNDS partners with the Center for Excellence in Youth Education at Mount Sinai to teach a 6-part introductory neuroscience course at P.S. 171 Patrick Henry Preparatory. The course begins by teaching students about the basic anatomy of a neuron and concludes with a discussion of several neurological disorders and the ways in which we can keep our brains healthy.

  • Lesson 1

This lesson introduces different brain's structures and their function, and outlines the intricacies of the brain's systematic organization. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the functions of major brain structures and describe the brain’s crucial role in regulating various bodily functions and activities in daily life.

  • Lesson 2

This lesson explores the anatomy and function of sensory organs, including the eyes, ears, nose, and tongue, and discusses how these systems work together to help us interpret the world around us. By the end of the lesson, students will understand how these sensory organs transmit signals to the brain, allowing us to perceive our environments.

  • Lesson 3

This lesson covers the brain regions that control movement and the connection between the nervous system and muscles. By the end of the lesson, students will understand how signals from the brain control voluntary movements.

  • Lesson 4

This lesson explores the brain processes related to thinking, learning, memory, problem-solving, and decision-making. By the end of the lesson, students will understand information processing in the brain, the role of memory in learning, and the mechanisms behind problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Lesson 5

This lesson introduces the causes, symptoms, and effects of neurological disorders on the brain. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify the symptoms of brain diseases and recognize the importance of ongoing research and medical interventions in treating them. This lesson aims to foster awareness and empathy for the challenges individuals with these conditions may face while inspiring students to see their potential as future scientists and doctors supporting patients.

  • Lesson 6

This lesson will cover factors that contribute to brain health, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, and mental well-being. By the end of the lesson, students will understand how proper nutrition, regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and stress management positively impact cognitive function and overall well-being. This lesson aims to empower students with knowledge about habits that support a healthy brain throughout their lives.
